Grow Home is a feel good exploration game with a vertically expanding world. Our fearless robot, BUD (Botanical Utility Droid), is dropped on a newly discovered planet by his mothership, a.k.a “mother.” His mission is simple; to find the star plant and grow it to 2000 meters. As we feed the plant we jack-and-the-beanstalk our way up its vines as it guides us to different environments and stretches towards the heavens.
When I saw that Journey was being re-released for the PS4 I was ecstatic. It was one game I never purchased, and never had the chance to play. Journey was created by the developers of a well-known game called Flow. Founder of Thatgamecompany, Jenova Chen, released Flow as a free Flash game in 2006 as his master’s thesis, which then got reworked into a PlayStation 3 game in 2007. I had an amazing first experience with the PS3 because my friend showed me Flow. As you unlocked numerous organisms from completing the game, you wanted to go back and eat everything in the Petrie dish again and again. Needless to say, after I saw who was behind the game I was excited.
There was no introduction or cut scene after I started a new game. I was dropped into an eerily dark forest filled with silhouettes of huge trees. The darkness dissipated as the little boy awoke from being unconscious. I wasn’t sure what I was going to find ahead. I was cautious as I climbed the first hill and leaned back as I slid down the other side. The first pit I hopped over was filled with spikes. It would be the first of many, but not my first death.
